Recall: 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for loose sunroofs

Some compact Mitsubishi crossovers may have shipped from the factory without the proper glass adhesive.

Mitsubishi is recalling 4,590 Outlander Sport crossovers from the 2011 model year to fix sunroofs that may detach from the body, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Workers at Mitsubishi's Normal, Ill., plant may not have placed adhesive primer to the panoramic sunroof glass before installing it to the roof, and as such, the sunroof can loosen and detach from the car.

Mitsubishi said it received one owner complaint outside the United States regarding a loose sunroof and conducted a recall in 2011 to fix this problem in a country it did not specify. The problem surfaced again in January 2013 in another country due to continued assembly line errors, the report said. A total of 3,181 cars are affected in the United States, with the rest in Canada.

Dealers will inspect the sunroofs for the adhesive primer and reinstall any sunroofs that do not have it applied. A timeline for parts and service has not been announced, although owners can call Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

In April, Mitsubishi recalled 8,263 Outlander Sport models from the 2013 model year to fix intermittent brake lights, faulty brake-shift interlocks and inaccurate fuel gauges.

Other automakers have also experienced problems with their panoramic sunroofs within the past 12 months. In February, Hyundai recalled 19,600 Veloster models for sunroofs that were cracking at highway speeds. In July 2012, Audi recalled 13,172 Q5 crossovers for  sunroofs that could suddenly shatter in cold weather.
